Welcome to "Can We Talk?" |
|
Our mission is to help parents keep their children healthy and safe by doing what parents do best—talking with their kids. "Can We Talk?" parent-child communication workshops help parents talk with their children about all the "tough issues."
Can we talk about what today's information-age kids are facing? As adults, we understand that children are bombarded with thousands of TV and Internet messages about sex, drugs, and violence. We also know that parents are the best educators when it comes to their own children—and they need support addressing important topics like puberty, relationships, sexuality, alcohol, drug use, and the law.
The "Can We Talk?" workshops are a resource for families—supporting Rhode Island’s parents, caregivers, community educators, and young people—giving them the tools to talk about health, safety, and justice. "Can We Talk?" provides parents and other caring adults with workshops, support, and resources, giving them the information and strategies needed to best protect and guide their children.

There are some facts and figures about Rhode Island’s families worth talking about---because our young people are affected by a wide range of issues including: alcohol use and related accidents, illegal drug use, teen pregnancy, harassment, internet fraud, and school failure.
Rhode Island’s children are facing huge challenges. And these are difficult-to-talk-about issues like sexuality, alcohol abuse, illegal drug use, and violence. This is where parents make a huge difference—as we believe that parents are the experts when it comes to keeping their children safe. From ten years of experience, "Can We Talk?" facilitators know that parents, guardians, and grandparents--partnering with teachers and community educators--are empowering young people to make healthy choices.
"Can We Talk?" promotes community dialogue--helping parents talk with their children about everything—from self-esteem to Internet safety to finding success in school. Can we talk about bringing "Can We Talk?" to your community?
Parents can start right now--with our "Can We Talk?" e-course for families.

Welcome to the Can We Talk? Six-Part Course |
Our mission is to help parents keep their children safe and healthy. Not always an easy task these days.
Can we talk…about what today’s information age kids are facing? As adults, we understand that children are bombarded with thousands of TV and Internet messages about sex, drugs, and violence. We know that parents are the best educators when it comes to talking with their own children about important topics like healthy relationships, sexuality, drug abuse, and violence. The Can We Talk? workshops were invented to give parents of 4th-8th graders the skills, resources, and support they need to have ongoing family talks about the tough issues. The goal of the Can We Talk? program is to make sure that every parent in New Mexico has access to support as they talk with their preteens and children about some of life’s most challenging topics.
Can We Talk? workshops were developed by the National Education Association with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Can We Talk? workshops are conducted all over the U.S. The workshops have been supporting families since 1999.
Our Can We Talk? workshop facilitators work with sponsoring workshops online and in the workplace, schools, and community organizations.
